Turn Your Shower into a Bathtub in Los Angeles

You’re coming home after a long day and what would be better than a long soak in the tub? But, when you come home, you’re staring at your shower. Sure, a shower is nice for a quick rinse, but if you really want to spend some time soaking in suds, it’s just all wrong.

You may think you are stuck with this situation. But did you know that you can convert that shower to a bathtub? It may sound impossible, but it can be done!

Bathtub to shower? Doesn’t it usually go the other way?

Just as there are many reasons why people convert their tub to a walk-in shower, there are just as many reasons why people want to turn that walk-in shower into a tub.

  • Kids: Got kids? It’s a whole lot easier to bathe a squirming infant or toddler in a bathtub than in the shower. If you don’t already have a full bath in your home, it makes sense to install a ath.
  • Resale value: If your home doesn’t have any tub, you may want to consider installing one, especially if you are thinking of selling your home in the near future. Having a tub increases the resale value of any home.
  • Relaxation: Few things are as relaxing as a long, soaking bath. You can sit back and unwind while the water soothes your muscles and joints. This can be especially helpful for people with arthritis.
  • Mobility issues: That slippery shower may be a no-go for people with mobility issues. Consider a walk-in tub. It allows you to bathe safely while seated. It’s a safer and more comfortable bathing experience for people with limited mobility.

What kinds of bathtubs should I choose?

There are many types of bathtubs out there. One of the most important issues is that you choose one that fits in the space you have. The next thing to consider? Cost. Create a budget for yourself before you begin your project. That way, you can work with your contractor to pick the tub that fills not only your design aesthetic, but also your pocketbook.

That said, there are many bathtub options out there for you, depending on how much you are planning on spending.

  • Fiberglass: Looking to replace your old tub and keep costs down? Fiberglass could be a good choice. With a wide array of colors and designs to choose from, 60-inch tub can cost between $200 and $500.
  • Cast Iron: These heat-retaining tubs keep your bath water hotter for longer, and are very durable. An enameled cast iron tub will run between $500 and $2,000.
  • Soaking Tubs: These bathtubs hold more water and are best suited for longer soaks in the bath. They cost between $250 and $12,000.
  • Walk In Tubs: These are the best choice for people who have mobility issues now or are considering those options in the future. With a walk-in tub, you literally walk into the tub, sit on a bench, and wait for warm water to envelope you. These tend to cost between $1,500 to $10,000.
  • Whirlpool Tubs: For the ultimate spa experience in your home, consider a whirlpool tub. They do tend to use more water and may require changes in your plumbing system, so expect to spend between $400 and $14,000 on a whirlpool tub.
  • Marble: For a more high-end option, consider cultured marble. It is an aesthetically pleasing and durable bathtub material. It is, however, a more expensive choice, running from about $1,500 to $2,200 for only the tub.

Converting your shower to a bathtub is your opportunity to update the aesthetic of your bathroom. You’ll be able to choose from bathtubs in a variety of styles and colors. You can also transform your wet-area walls with a custom acrylic, composite wall system or custom tile. While you’re at it, why not add floating shelves and safety grab bars? Your remodel will give your bathroom a brand-new look.

What happens in a shower to tub conversion?

Sure, you may see some DIY videos on the internet about how to convert your shower to a tub, but it is a far more complicated project than it looks. Make sure you hire a highly qualified contractor for the job. With a qualified contractor, you can be sure that your remodel is done within your timeframe and budget and done correctly the first time.

What will happen when you decide to convert a shower to a tub? First, one of two things will happen. Either the entire shower will be demolished and a new shower added or a new tub area will be added to the existing shower.

If you chose not to demolish your current shower, the following will happen:

  1. Standard tub or smaller tub? A standard shower is smaller than a standard tub. If the current shower area isn’t big enough for a tub, the next decision to make will be whether to fully demolish the shower and change the walls around to accommodate the tub or install a smaller tub.
  2. The next step is to build a wall in the shower for the tub wall.
  3. After that’s done, the wall area will be tiled (unless you’re using pre-fab wall panels).

If you decide to completely demolish your shower to install the bathtub, your contractor will first tear out your existing shower before building up the space for your new tub.
